Best Klein Curaçao Boat Trips: Compare the Top Tours

There is no single best boat, because the four that run the crossing differ on things people weigh differently. Mermaid has the most reviews by a distance (4.8 from 339) and its own beach house. Miss Ann lands you at the most complete set-up on the island — restrooms, a freshwater shower, a buffet area and a beach bar. Irie Tours is the cheapest at $140 and the only one with the open bar in the fare. The Gold Seahorse is the shortest day at eight hours and has a restroom on board. Rougher than most people expect, and the reason is geography rather than any one operator. The island sits about 15 miles off the south-east tip of Curaçao, so the outward leg runs into the prevailing trade wind and the swell it pushes ahead of it, while the return runs with the sea behind and is markedly calmer. Each operator publishes its own figure and they are not measured the same way: Miss Ann and the Gold Seahorse both quote about an hour, Irie quotes one to one and a half hours, and Mermaid puts the run from Spanish Water at around two hours. They leave from different marinas on different hull types, and the sea state on the day moves all of them. Treat every one of these as the operator's claim rather than a stopwatch reading.

It is a full-service building with shade, restrooms, a freshwater shower, a restaurant and buffet area, a beach bar with swings, a massage area and a dive school. Mermaid guests get exclusive use of their own beach house with palapas and beach chairs. Irie Tours and the Gold Seahorse do not run beach houses on the island — Irie provides beach chairs and the Gold Seahorse serves lunch from the boat.

No. It is uninhabited, flat and treeless, with no shop, no mains water, no public toilet and no shade beyond the palapas the operators put up themselves. Everything you eat, drink and sit under arrives on the boat you came on, which is why the beach-house question is a real one rather than a luxury. Take everything you carry ashore back with you; the island has no waste collection.

Not on any scheduled service. There is no ferry, no airstrip and no public boat. The only alternatives to a day trip are a private charter, which starts around $950 for the boat, or your own vessel — and the crossing is 15 miles of open water that the day operators themselves treat with respect. For almost everyone the day trip is the route, and the real question is which boat.

It is worth it if what you want is an empty white-sand beach, clear water and a reef you can swim to from the shore, and if a long day with a rough two hours in it does not put you off. It is not worth it if you are prone to seasickness, travelling with small children who will not sit still for the crossing, or short on days on Curaçao — the mainland's own beaches are genuinely good and cost a fraction of this. A catamaran's two hulls damp the rolling motion that a single-hulled boat makes in a beam sea, which is what most people mean by a rough crossing here — so the Irie and Gold Seahorse catamarans have an advantage on paper. The Gold Seahorse is also the shortest day at eight hours. What it does not remove is the pitching over a head swell on the way out. If the crossing itself is the problem rather than the boat, the faster and shorter alternatives avoid the open-water leg entirely.

From three different places, which is the single most common booking mistake. The Mermaid leaves from the Fishermen's Pier on Caracasbaaiweg at Jan Thiel; Irie Tours leaves from The Village Marina at the Jan Thiel roundabout; Miss Ann leaves from Marina Santa Barbara; and the Gold Seahorse from Kima Kalki Marina on Spanish Water. Regularly. The reef edge starts a few metres off the west beach and green turtles feed in the shallows there, so a sighting is a routine part of the day rather than a lucky one. Every boat on this route includes a mask and snorkel; Miss Ann runs a guided snorkel safari. Dolphins on the crossing are a real possibility but are not promised by anyone.

It depends far more on the crossing than on the island. The island itself is ideal for children — shallow, calm, clean water on the lee side. The two hours of open water at each end are the problem, and one operator excludes pregnant women and people with back or heart problems outright, which tells you something about the motion. If you do go with children, the boats with a beach house, shade and a toilet ashore are worth the small premium.

Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a towel, swimwear, and motion-sickness tablets taken before you board rather than after you feel it. Bring cash or a card if your boat sells alcohol separately — Mermaid and the Gold Seahorse both do, and the Gold Seahorse's bar is card-only. There is nowhere on the island to buy anything you forget.

Curaçao sits below the main hurricane belt and runs boats year-round, so the question is really about sea state and crowds rather than season. The trade winds are typically strongest in the first months of the year, which is also the busiest booking period, and calmer mornings are more common later in the year. Whatever the month, the morning crossing is the rougher one and boats cancel on genuinely bad days rather than sail into them.
