Klein Curaçao Tours Compared

Searching for the best Klein Curaçao tour turns up four boats that look almost identical: same island, same photographs, same day length, prices within $20 of each other. That resemblance is real at the level of the brochure and misleading at the level of the day you will actually have.

The useful first cut is not which operator, but which format. There are six shapes of trip that reach or replace this island, and choosing among them eliminates most of the decision before you compare a single operator.

1. The standard catamaran day trip

A sailing catamaran carrying a full load of passengers, leaving between 06:30 and 07:30 and back mid-afternoon. Two hulls mean less rolling motion in a beam sea, and bow trampolines that are either the best seat on the boat or the wettest, depending on the swell.

Irie Tours runs this format to Klein Curaçao from The Village Marina at Jan Thiel for $140 — the cheapest crossing available, and the only one with the open bar inside the fare rather than sold aboard. It also includes transfers free inside the Jan Thiel area and at $15 per person beyond it, which is worth more than it sounds against a 06:30 taxi. 2. The motor yacht day trip

A displacement or planing motor hull rather than a sailing boat. Heavier, steadier in a head sea, generally with more enclosed space and often with the operator’s own facilities ashore.

Both of the boats that run beach houses on Klein Curaçao sit in this category. Mermaid ($155) carries the most reviews on the route by a distance — 4.8 from 339 — and gives guests exclusive use of its own beach house with palapas and beach chairs, breakfast served on the island and free snorkel masks. Miss Ann ($155) lands at the most complete set-up anyone has: restrooms, a freshwater shower, a buffet area, a beach bar and a dive school, plus a guided snorkel safari and a rum punch happy hour on the way home.

3. The premium catamaran yacht

A smaller, more finished boat sold on the quality of the day aboard rather than the facilities ashore. All Boat Charters’ Gold Seahorse ($160) is this format on Klein Curaçao: teak side decks, cushioned sun beds, a wheelhouse you can join the captain in, a restroom on board, and the most ambitious lunch of the four — filet mignon, loin ribs, salmon and chicken with salads and corn on the cob, served from the boat.

It is also the shortest day at eight hours rather than nine, and it leaves from Kima Kalki Marina on sheltered Spanish Water. Read its exclusions before booking: the operator lists the trip as unsuitable for pregnant women and people with back or heart problems.

4. Private charter

Not a seat on a scheduled boat but the boat itself. Charters on Curaçao start around $950 for up to eight people and run to $1,300 and beyond for larger groups, which sounds like a different universe until you divide it. For four or more it lands in the same neighbourhood as four or more seats, and it buys the thing money cannot otherwise buy here: your own departure time and your own passenger list. 5. Small-group and self-drive

A narrower slice, and mostly inshore rather than to Klein Curaçao. Self-drive boat rental runs from around $269 for up to six people for three hours along the coast; small-group private tours with a skipper start around $330. None of these crosses to Klein Curaçao — the distance and the open water put it outside what these boats are licensed and equipped for — but if your objection to the standard trip is the crowd rather than the island, this is the direction to look.

6. The half-day inshore alternative

The format nobody searching for “Klein Curaçao tours” starts with, and the right answer for a real share of them. Irie Tours’ four-and-a-half-hour snorkel cruise ($100) runs through Spanish Water and along the south coast to the Tugboat Wreck and a second reef inside the national underwater park, with an open bar and a barbecue lunch and no open-water crossing at any point. Its sunset cruise ($75) is shorter still.

You do not get Klein Curaçao. You get a boat, a barbecue, genuinely good snorkelling and half a day back — and on a day when the forecast has closed the crossing, you get to go out at all.

So which is best?

For most people, the motor yacht day trip with a beach house: Mermaid on reviews and value, Miss Ann if facilities on the island matter. For the cheapest crossing with drinks included and a lift to the pier, Irie Tours. For the shortest day and the best lunch, the Gold Seahorse.
