Klein Curaçao Beach Guide
Klein Curaçao's beach is long, pale and undeveloped, with clear water and almost no natural shade. Where it gets busy, what each boat sets up on the sand, and the snorkelling.
Klein Curaçao’s beach is long, pale and undeveloped, with clear water and very little natural shade. It runs for about half a mile down the sheltered west side of the island, the side every boat lands on, and there is nothing built on it except the operators’ own beach houses and a few huts. What you get on the sand depends on the boat you book.

What it is like on the beach
The beach is on the island’s west (lee) side, sheltered from the trade wind that blows across the island for most of the year. The sand is white and soft, the water is clear and calm, and the bottom shelves gently, so you can wade in without a drop-off at the edge.
- Good for swimming. On a normal day the water off the west beach is calm enough for confident and nervous swimmers alike, and shallow close to shore.
- Busy near the tour areas. The boats land guests around the same stretch, where the beach houses and huts stand, and that is where most people stay all day.
- Quieter farther along the shore. Walk ten minutes along the sand away from the landing and you can usually find a stretch to yourself.
- Very little natural shade. The island is flat and almost treeless, with only a few coconut palms. Shade comes from whatever your operator has put up.
- An excellent setting for a full-day beach trip. Five to six hours ashore on an uninhabited island, with no road, no vendors and no hotel behind you.
The other side of the island is a different coast. The east (windward) shore takes the full force of the sea, and it is where the pink lighthouse stands back from the shore and the rusting tanker Maria Bianca Guidesman lies on the rocks. It is worth the walk, about forty minutes there and back over coral rubble and scrub, but it is not a place to swim. Wear water shoes or sandals for that walk, because the path is not sand.
Facilities: your operator matters
Klein Curaçao has no shop, no mains water, no public toilet and almost no natural shade. Everything you sit under, eat and drink comes from your boat operator, and the four full-day boats set up very differently.
| Boat | On the beach | Toilets ashore | Shower ashore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miss Ann | Full-service beach house: shade, restaurant and buffet area, beach bar with swings, massage area, dive school | Yes, at the beach house | Yes, freshwater |
| Mermaid | Exclusive use of its own beach house, with a thatched-roof patio, palapas and beach chairs set out before you land | Yes, at the beach house | Yes, freshwater |
| Irie Tours | Beach chairs; barbecue lunch served on the beach | No | No |
| Gold Seahorse | Lunch and shade from the boat | No, but a restroom on board | No |
Mermaid and Miss Ann provide the strongest beach-house setup. Both have restrooms and a freshwater shower, which is worth a lot before a crossing home. Miss Ann has the most complete facilities as the operator describes them, adding a beach bar, a massage area and a dive school. One reviewer in August 2026 found the bathroom being rebuilt on the day, so ask what is in place for your date if it matters. The Mermaid beach house is for its own guests only, with palapas and beach chairs ready when you land, and it has the most reviews of any boat on the route.
Irie Tours is $15 cheaper than either and includes an open bar, but you spend the day on beach chairs in the sun with no building to retreat to. All four boats compared, or our Irie Tours review.
Snorkelling off the beach
The snorkelling is good, although the sandy central areas right in front of the landing are less interesting than the reef farther out. Close to shore the bottom is sand and seagrass, about 1 to 5 metres deep, with scattered small coral heads. Green turtles graze that seagrass, so the shallows are where most people see one. The coral reef slope starts roughly 150 metres off the beach, an easy swim if you are comfortable in open water.
Every full-day boat includes a mask and snorkel, and Miss Ann adds a guided snorkel safari. Do not touch or chase the turtles, and float instead of standing, because coral and seagrass both lose when people put their feet down. What the snorkelling is like, in full.
Turtles nest on this beach
Klein Curaçao is a protected wetland under the Ramsar Convention, listed in 2018, and its beaches are nesting sites for hawksbill, loggerhead and green turtles. If you come across a nest or hatchlings, keep well back and leave them alone. The same rule applies to the birds that nest on the island, including least terns.
Practical tips for a day on the sand
- Sun protection first. With almost no natural shade, a hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen are not optional, and a rash guard helps for long snorkels.
- Water shoes or sandals for the walk to the lighthouse and the wreck.
- Stay on the west side to swim. The windward coast is rough, with strong surf.
- Pick your spot early. If you want quiet, walk away from the landing soon after you arrive, then come back for lunch.
- Bring cash or a card for drinks and extras your fare does not cover.

Verdict
The beach is special because it remains largely undeveloped: white sand, clear water and no buildings beyond the operators’ bases. The trade-off is that comfort is something you book, not something the island provides. If shade, a toilet and a shower matter, choose Miss Ann or the Mermaid. If you want the lowest fare with drinks included and are happy in the sun, Irie Tours is the better fit. Which boat suits you.
Frequently asked questions
Is there shade on Klein Curaçao beach?
Very little natural shade. The island is flat and almost treeless, so shade comes from your operator: Miss Ann and the Mermaid have beach houses, Irie Tours provides beach chairs, and the Gold Seahorse gives shade on the boat.
Are there toilets on Klein Curaçao?
There is no public toilet. Miss Ann and Mermaid have restrooms at their beach houses for their own guests, and the Gold Seahorse has a restroom on board.
Can you swim on both sides of Klein Curaçao?
Swim only on the sheltered west side, where the boats land. The east (windward) coast, where the lighthouse and the shipwreck are, has rough surf and is for walking, not swimming.
Is the snorkelling good right off the beach?
Yes. Turtles feed in the seagrass shallows close to shore, and the coral reef slope starts roughly 150 metres out. The sandy patches right in front of the landing are the least interesting part.
Pick Your Boat, Then Check the Date
Crossing time, group size, shade, toilets and what lunch actually looks like differ more between these boats than the price does. Compare them, then check availability for your date.
