Once you have decided to go to Klein Curaçao, the decision that is left is which operator. It is a harder question than it looks, because all four sell the same island with the same photographs at prices $20 apart — and because the differences that matter most are the ones nobody puts on a booking page.

Here is what each one is, what it is genuinely better at, and the one thing about the list that is worth saying plainly first.

Mermaid — the most-reviewed boat on the crossing

Mermaid Boat Trips runs a purpose-built sea-going motor vessel rather than a sailing catamaran, boarding from 06:45 every day except Saturday. Its own description puts the run from Spanish Water at around two hours, which is the longest claim of the four — a heavier displacement hull is steadier in a swell and slower through it.

What it is best at is the shore end. Guests get exclusive use of the Mermaid beach house, with palapas and beach chairs set out before they land, breakfast served on the island, a barbecue lunch, free snorkel masks and a walking-tour booklet for the lighthouse and the wreck. Alcohol is not included: around $5 for a beer, wine or mixed drink, $10 for a cocktail.

Its review volume is the real argument. 339 ratings at 4.8 is a score with weight behind it, and no other boat on this route is close. Full breakdown.

Miss Ann — the most complete set-up on the island

Miss Ann crosses by motor yacht from Marina Santa Barbara and quotes about an hour. What it lands you at is the most built-out operation Klein Curaçao has: shade, restrooms, a freshwater shower, a restaurant and buffet area, a beach bar with swings, a massage area and an exclusive dive school.

The trip comes in two versions. Weekdays bring a cooked breakfast, a three-piece barbecue lunch and a rum punch happy hour on the way home, with the premium open bar available at $35. The Weekend Supreme option upgrades the food to fish stew with beef and chicken skewers and folds the open bar into the fare from 12:30 to 18:00. A guided snorkel safari is included either way.

Irie Tours — cheapest, drinks in, and a lift to the pier

The cheapest crossing available here, on a sailing catamaran with bow trampolines, quoting one to one and a half hours. Two things make it punch above its price.

First, the open bar is inside the fare — water, sodas, juice, rum, vodka, blue Curaçao, wine and beer from 12:30. None of the other three do that. Second, it is the only operator including transport: free pickup inside the Jan Thiel area and $15 per person from elsewhere, against a 06:30 taxi that costs considerably more.

What you give up is the building. Beach chairs, yes; a beach house with a toilet and a shower, no. Lunch is a barbecue of meat and chicken skewers, chorizo, salads and garlic bread, with vegetarian, vegan and pescatarian versions on request. Full breakdown.

Gold Seahorse (All Boat Charters) — shortest day, best lunch

A catamaran yacht with teak side decks, cushioned sun beds, a wheelhouse you can join the captain in and a restroom on board — the only one of the four with a toilet at sea rather than ashore. It quotes about an hour from Kima Kalki Marina and runs an eight-hour day, an hour shorter than everyone else.

The lunch is the most ambitious on the route: filet mignon, loin ribs, salmon and chicken with potato salad, corn on the cob, vegetable salad, baguette and prawn crackers. Drinks are bought aboard, cocktails at $10, and the bar is card only.

Two caveats. Its 4.5 across 298 reviews is the lowest score of the four, though still good. And it lists the trip as unsuitable for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, wheelchair users and people with pre-existing medical conditions — a frank statement about the motion that says as much about the route as about the boat.
